Kirk Bowman's research foci include comparative development, democracy, the politics of tourism, the politics of urban innovation, soccer and politics, and Latin America. He is author of more than 24 articles and book chapters in such journals as World Development, Comparative Political Studies, Journal of Latin American Studies, Latin American Research Review (forthcoming), Journal of Peace Research, and others. His books include Militarization, Democracy, and Development: The Perils of Praetorianism in Latin America (Penn State); Peddling Paradise: The Politics of Tourism in Latin America (Lynne Rienner, April 2013); and Lessons from Latin America: Innovations in Politics, Culture, and Development (with Felipe Arocena, Sugust 2014, Toronto University Press).
As the Jon R. Wilcox Term Professor in Soccer and Global Politics, Dr. Bowman's current research focus is the relationship between soccer, identity, and comparative politics/society.
